BEST People

George is one of the friendliest people in our department. George is always very kind and patient with our guests, looking for ways to make them smile and to ensure that they have what they need. He practices the GOLD standard and Greets everybody with a smile. This extends to our co-workers too. He speaks to everyone who comes in with a happy “Hi” or “So glad you are here today” greeting. What I recently noticed is that he makes it a point to introduce himself to our new employees (of which we’ve had many this year). He shares his positive experience as a Trojan and gives them helpful tips and tricks to do their tasks. He makes sure that they know the other employees who are working the shift and even introduces them to the guests that he knows by name. I was curious one day and asked him if our manager had asked him to do that. He said he had taken it upon himself to do it on his own. When I asked why he said that we had been having a lot of turnover and it’s tough for us to give good service when we don’t have enough employees on a shift. He said he wanted to do his part to make sure that the new people feel like they are welcome and belong so that they will want to stay. Since then, I started to do the same thing too. I believe that George is a good candidate for a Fight On Award as he is truly an example of BEST People.

BEST Partnerships

Hecuba is a student worker at the Bookstore. She usually works on the third floor and interacts with guests as they are browsing through the tee shirts. As fall turned to winter, she noticed that an increasing number of students were coming in looking for long sleeve tee shirts and gloves. While making small talk with them, she asked a student if they were making the purchase for the upcoming night game. They replied no and said that the air conditioning in Leavey Library is kept at a very cold temperature and they were trying to find a way to stay comfortable but not overheat. She found the same response from several students. Hecuba talked with her manager about moving some of the long sleeve shirts to the front of the store and creating a study essentials display. She told her roommate who is on USG and they posted about it on their TikTok page. Additionally, she spoke to one of the designers about creating long sleeve tee shirts with attached fingerless mittens made from the same material as the shirt and they are considering it! Hecuba observed a customer need and made suggestions to make it easier for shoppers to find the product that needed. Hecuba thought “out of the box” and found a way to showcase our products and partnered with a campus organization to reach more students.

  1. Reviewers want to know how the individual exemplifies and embodies the identified behavior or traits. Example(s) must be included.
  2. Evidence that the individual is committed to the student experience or workplace environment.
  3. Evidence of a link between the University and Auxiliary Services.
